10 Innovative Buildings
The world of architecture is changing and evolving. Today, architects have to take into consideration a wide array of different elements when they are designing a building. The days of simply laying out a design using relatively familiar materials are still with us. But more and more, architects are finding that they have to change how they approach their profession and building.
In recent years, it has become increasingly common for architects to know about cutting-edge building materials, building approaches, and even green materials.
Let’s take a look at 10 buildings that are pushing the boundaries of design.
Enric Ruiz-Geli’s Villa Bio Home
Innovative structures come in all shapes and sizes. Take the work of architect Enric Ruiz-Geli, whose work most definitely shapes the imagination. The openness of his Villa Bio design is as innovative as the creative grass roof that it sports. Ruiz-Geli’s work may seem more at home in a futuristic science-fiction film than in reality, but this design is quite real.
Blu Homes’ Element
Don’t worry, Blu Homes are not sad; quite the contrary in fact. Blu Homes are focusing on being as green as possible. Their Element home is factory built, but nothing like the prefabricated homes you may remember. Their homes such as the Element have impressive designs and are very eco-friendly.
Sustain Design Studios’ miniHome TRIO
While bigger is usually better, this isn’t always the case. Take, for example, the work being done by Canadian based design studio Sustain. Sustain is specializing in building some very striking mini homes that are just beautiful to look at. The TRIO is a good example of what is now possible in the world of home building.
Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany
The Allianz Arena is a showstopper that was designed by the renowned Swiss architecture firm of Herzog & de Meuron. This stadium, which was opened in May of 2005 at a cost of over 300 million euros, is one of the more impressive large structures built in recent decades. Impressively the stadium, yes the entire stadium, can even change its exterior colors. For an idea of just how impressive modern architecture can get, check out the impressive work from Herzog & de Meuron.
EggO House
Haven’t you ever wondered why sometimes trees just can’t be left where they are when homes are built? One architectural firm ended up tackling this issue head on, building the EggO House. This Czech Republic architectural firm ended up building a unique structure that surrounded not one but several trees. You definitely can’t miss it.
Upcycle Living
Upcycle Living is really taking this “new way of building” thing pretty seriously. They have decided to do away with as much building waste as possible. Part of this strategy is thus to incorporate using old shipping containers as a way to create affordable housing for all.
The Sliding House
Your eyes are not deceiving you. The architectural firm dRMM has indeed built a home that has a sliding roof. The way it works is that there are two structures with an outer structure that can be slid back and forth. The house underneath is loaded with windows and the result, well, is pretty magical.
Why Not Fly Away With Your Own Plane Hotel
Here is a novel building concept and a green one as well. Instead of letting an old jumbo jet simply rot, why not put it to good use? That is what a Dutch hotel company has done. In the process, they have created a pretty amazing hotel that no one will ever forget visiting.
The Jumbo Hostel
If you are in Sweden, you can also try out the Jumbo Hostel. Those looking for what may be the most innovative hostel experience in the world can stay at what must be one of the world’s coolest hostels. The Jumbo Hostel has taken a 747 jumbo jet and made it into an unforgettable experience. An exercise in recycling and going green has never been this fun.
The BrightBuilt Barn
With an eye toward the future of architecture, Kaplan Thompson Architects have designed a truly unique home that may look pretty ordinary on the outside, but it is far from being ordinary. Few home designs have incorporated as many eco-friendly and green ideas as this one. Built to last 200 years, the BrightBuilt Barn has too many energy saving features to even mention. It’s a real winner.
