If you truly want to have your pulse on the fashion industry, there are a few fashion icons that it only makes sense to watch carefully.  Much can be learned from fashion designers that are at the top of the game.  The five fashion designers we have selected for our list are designers that not only understand how to make a wonderful garment that also fits well, but they also know how to create a strong brand name.  Additionally, these 5 players in the fashion industry have displayed considerable business savvy throughout their respective careers.

Michael Kors

Michael Kors has certainly made his impression on the fashion industry.  Long before Kors was a well-known face on Bravo’s Project Runway, Kors had already firmly made his name in the fashion industry.  Kors has seen his creations in stores across the world including Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and Saks Fifth Avenue, among many others.  Today, in additional to his line of clothing, Kors also produces accessories like shoes and handbags.  Part of what makes Kors such a well-known figure is his ability to draw celebrities to his clothing.  On numerous occasions, Kors has seen his designs appear in movies.  The fact that Kors is still relatively young, as he was born in 1959, means that he should be designing for decades to come. Michael Kors will remain a significant fashion designer to follow and keep an eye on.

Anna Sui

Fashion designer Anna Sui is a graduate of the famous Parsons The New School for Design.  In the early 1990’s, Sui began unveiling her own line of clothing.  Since that time, she has seen her reputation grow.  In recent years, Sui has expanded into other areas of fashion such as shoes.  As of 2010, Sui is considered to be one of the world’s top designers and has been recognized by publications around the world.

John Galliano

British designer John Galliano is another fashion designer who has definitely made his mark on the fashion world.  Like Kors, Galliano is still a young man as he was born in 1960.  This means that he has decades of fashion design still ahead of him.  Galliano received his education at London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. In the early 1990’s, he was already working on high-profile projects, such as designing costumes for Kylie Minogue.  Galliano has worked as a designer for Givenchy and Christian Dior.  Celebrities and other high-profile clients frequently wear his designs.

Paul Smith

Like John Galliano, Paul Smith is also from the United Kingdom.  Has Smith been a successful fashion designer?  The fact that Queen Elizabeth has knighted him in 2000 probably answers that question.  The number of different companies and products that bear the Paul Smith name is nothing short of staggering.  The Paul Smith line of products covers every type of clothing imaginable.  It also covers related items such as rugs, watches, and furniture.  The fact that the Paul Smith brand name is so pervasive definitely makes this a designer to continue to watch.

Vera Wang

Vera Wang is a name that is well known to the fashion world.  Wang’s work in the fashion industry goes back several decades and included years working for the fashion magazine Vogue.  Today, Wang has designed gowns and dresses for some of Hollywood’s highest profile women.  While many have heard of her extensive accomplishments in the world of fashion, many are less aware of all the work that she has done as a costume designer for figure skating costumes.  Wang’s fashion line includes fragrances and even housewares.
