How to Find a Career in the Beauty Industry

The key “trick” to starting a career in the beauty industry isn’t really as much of a trick as it might seem.  Proper training and proof of proper training can go a very long way towards securing a job in the beauty industry.  This means schooling and, in many cases, certification.  However, there is another step that one must take before discussing certification and training, and that is to pick a career path.

It is important to know which career suits you best within the beauty industry.  Ultimately, you may only be able to find this out once you have experimented a little, but it is still a very good idea to take the time and evaluate both your skills and your interest.  If you are able to factor both of these elements together correctly, you should be able to find a beauty related career that fits your interest and personality.  This is no small point for if you truly want to excel in your new career it is necessary that you pick what you will not only like but also be good at.  People will be paying you for your services after all, and that means you need to be good!

Here are some specific paths for careers in the beauty industry you may want to consider.

Hairstylist

A hairstylist doesn’t just work to cut hair.  A hairstylist also offers such services as hair coloring and perms.  Those considering this beauty industry career will want to consider if they feel comfortable with the detailed work that is involved. If you are interested in becoming a hairstylist, of course it is necessary to attend beauty school. If your region requires licensing, it is also important to make sure you have the proper paperwork. Once your ducks are in a row, go ahead and apply to work at whatever beauty salons strike your fancy. You may even want to consider opening up your own salon.

Esthetician

The esthetician can be expected to perform a variety of different tasks, such as giving facials and waxing. Due to the nature of the job, you are likely to be expected to be hands on and working with clients in a more intimate fashion than in most other beauty industry careers. The training necessary to become an esthetician varies from region to region. The first step is to find out what kind of licensing and training is required in the area in which you live. Once you are a professional esthetician, you can consider jobs in spas, salons, or even related fields like beauty consulting.

Make-Up Artist

The world will always need make-up experts and make-up artists.  If you love make up and you love the idea of making people look better, then this might be the beauty industry job for you.   Once you have trained as a makeup artist, one of the keys to pursuing your career is networking.  Go out there and meet people.  Also go out there and do make up.  Everything from working on wedding make-up to make up on independent films will give you the experience you need to further your career.  Some make-up artists even work at the beauty counter of a department store to perfect their craft.

Massage Therapy

Few careers of any kind, in any industry, can make people feel as good as the massage therapist.  Massage therapy can work the tension out of the body.  In the process they release cortisol, a stress hormone that actually can cause people to age.  While it may seem odd, a good massage can actually prolong someone’s life.  If you become a fully licensed massage therapist you may even be able to open up your own business.

Massage therapy is another field that you will need to receive training in before getting started.  Research the different types of massage that are out there.  There is everything from aromatherapy massage to sports massage. Most massage schools teach Swedish massage, but if you want to learn something different, make sure you have a plan for how to get all of the expertise you need.  Once you have finished your training, make sure you are licensed and consider even getting board certified.  The more solid credentials you have under your belt, the better.

Education Is Key

For anyone interested in any of the careers mentioned above, education is a vitally important component.  It is key to note that each of these different careers have different educational paths.  Consider that a beauty and fashion writer and beauty and fashion consultant would be best served by holding degrees from a fashion and design school.  Clearly the types and levels of education differ greatly from career to career, and this is an element in the process that must be considered.

Before selecting your career path, carefully consider which of these, or other beauty industry options, best suit your needs and your personality.  Remember that you can be a lifelong learner and grow throughout your career.  Just because you begin in one segment of the beauty industry doesn’t mean that has to be your career path for life.
