California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB) strives to combine the values of service and high quality education, and can be regarded as a comprehensive state university. The working class along with historically undereducated and lower-income individuals will be specifically targeted in the academic offerings of the campus, allowing the diverse population of California to benefit. It offers operation year round with an enriched learning and living environment. The university's identity will be distinguished by a strong dedication to multilingual, multicultural, gender-equitable learning. The university will be a collaborative, intellectual community that will be set apart from others by fostering partnerships with existing public and private institutions. As a result of these partnerships, students, faculty, and staff will be able to receive innovative instruction and participate in scholarly and creative activity as well as coordinated community service at various institutions.
Through use of a variety of technologies, the university aims to be a catalyst for learning in an enriching environment. CSUMB's curriculum will be student and society centered, with enough breadth and depth to meet needs both regionally and statewide, especially those involving inner-city and isolated rural populations, as well as needs pertaining to communities in the immediate Tri-County region (Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito). The instructional programs will aim to distinguish themselves, building on assets in the region and developing specialty clusters in areas like: the sciences (marine, atmospheric, and environmental); visual and performing arts and related humanities; languages, cultures, and international studies; education; business; studies of human behavior, information, and communication, within broad curricular areas; and professional study.
A culture of innovation will be developed by the university in its general design and organization. It will use various new pedagogical and instructional approaches, of which distance learning will be one. The creative and productive talents of students, faculty, and staff will be valued and cultivated by institutional programs, which will also look for ways to contribute to the state's economy, communities' well-being, as well as the quality of life and development of its students, faculty, and service areas.
