Situated in Statesboro, Georgia, Georgia Southern University is a public, regional coed university. It is the largest center of higher education in southern Georgia, and it is part of the University System of Georgia. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classified Georgia Southern as a doctoral and research university in 2006. This university comes in at number five for being the biggest university in Georgia, with 19,086 students enrolled in the Fall of 2009, behind the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Over the past 10 years, student proficiency requirements have increased a great deal - in 1999 SAT scores averaged about 987. In the Fall Semester of 2009, Georgia Southern University's incoming freshmen's average SAT score was above 1106. This reflected an increase of 119 points. The SAT average was 1111 in 2008 for freshman, and this was the 4th highest in the University System of Georgia.
Once again, the 2010 edition of America's Best Colleges published by U.S. News and World Report, recognized Georgia Southern as a national university. In April of the year 2006, there was a reclassification of Georgia Southern into a doctoral/research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
The university has eight different colleges that offer a choice of more than 115 degrees - bachelor's, master's, and doctorate.
There has been a significant expansion of Georgia Southern's degree offerings online, in addition to becoming a national university. The online growth has heavily involved providing a number of online degree choices for instructors who wish to elevate their educational level. If you already have an undergraduate degree, you can apply for a Master of Education degree in a variety of concentrations. Among the concentrations are Accomplished Teaching, Educational Leadership, Higher Education Administration, Instructional Improvement, and Instructional Technology. On January 9, 2008, Georgia Southern launched its efforts in online degree expansion. There are three qualification levels for Georgia teachers established by the Georgia Department of Education, the Board of Education, and the Professional Standards Commission, which are Initial Instruction, Accomplished Instruction, and Exemplary Instruction. They also have online degree programs in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Web MBA, Master of Science in Kinesiology (Coaching), Master of Science in Applied Economics, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, as well as a Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. You can also get a blended program for Master of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Kinesiology, and the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) in Teaching and Learning degrees. The university's School of Nursing introduced the DNP online in the Autumn of 2008. There is only one other similar degree program available in Georgia. It joins the other four doctorate degree programs offered by the university: psychology (PsyD), public health (DrPH), and two education degree programs (EdD).
