Practical Nursing Diploma

Graduates of the Practical Nursing diploma program will be ready to assume jobs as practitioners and employees within the discipline of nursing in many health care settings under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Once graduates successfully complete the program, they may apply to the state board of nursing for licensure by examination. Once you have completed the program, you are able to get a job as a licensed practical nurse or LPN. The vast majority of Spencerian LPNs find good positions after they graduate.

Clinical and practical programs are part of the nursing student training. This takes place in a number of hospitals and other health care facilities under the supervision of qualified nursing faculty. Daytime and nighttime sessions of this program are offered.

A person who completes the Spencerian College Practical Nursing Program may:

  • Take on the role of a competent, caring practical nurse in a number of structured health care settings, while being supervised or directed by a registered nurse.
  • Provide safe and effective nursing care to individuals and families, utilizing a caring attitude, functional health indicators, and nursing procedures.
  • Exhibit self-direction and responsibility for remaining knowledgeable in the field of nursing by setting goals for personal and professional development.
  • Demonstrate skills required for communicating with both patients and co-workers.
  • Demonstrate accountability, uphold ethical and legal standards of the profession, and adhere to the standards as well.

Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S)

The A.A.S Degree in Nursing has been developed to supplement a student's background in licensed nursing and provide the necessary training for LPNs to take the licensing examination to become registered nurses.

In this program, the main goal is to prepare the novice practitioner to understand and meet human needs within the community. Two books that have formed the foundation of the nursing program are Gordon's Functional Health Patterns and Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. The core classes include: Professional Behaviors, Communication, Assessment, Clinical Decision Making, Caring Interventions, Teaching and Learning, Collaboration, and Managing Care.
