In 1873 Vanderbilt University was started by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who donated one million dollars to establish this university. The leaders of the Methodist Episcopal Church led Vanderbilt for the first forty years.

The nursing division at University of Vanderbilt was established in 1909, and currently also conducts a distance learning program. The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission accredited the nursing school.
