Western Governor's University

Western Governors University is an online university whose mission is to expand access to higher education via online, competency-based degree programs. WGU, with 14,000 students from every state in the union, is now truly a national university.

The university continues to make learning accessible to those adult learners who require flexibility to attain their educational and career goals. This is made possible by WGU's innovative competency-based academic approach which permits students to work education into their lives, rather than building their lives around getting an education.

WGU was created by 19 governors of the United States. This is the first time that governors from multiple states had joined resources to create a new university. In addition, WGU is supported by more than 20 corporations and foundations that believe in WGU's dedication to producing graduates who are extremely competent.

Western Governors University strives to make post-secondary educational opportunities more accessible by offering students a way to learn regardless of where they are located or their time constraints, and to earn competency-based degrees and other credentials that academic institutions and employers look upon favorably.

Mission

WGU is an Online University that is very serious about its mission. WGU was established to expand access to higher education by providing online, competency-based degree programs, and its mission continues to be one of assisting hardworking adults attain their educational goals and enhance their career opportunities.

The governors also insisted that WGU remain affordable, flexible, and student-centered to bring this mission to life. So WGU tries to serve as many students as possible. This includes minorities, first generation college students, people who do not make a lot of money, and others whose hectic lives or farflung geographic locations make it impossible for them to attend traditional, campus-based colleges.

WGU has grown and transformed into a national university, with more than 12,000 enrollees from every state in the country, and yet it remains non-bureaucratic and innovative. Praise is continually lavished on it due to its academic model; it also continues to improve its reputation with employers due to the fact that it consistently graduates extremely competent professionals.
