WTI - Wichita

Beginning in 1954, Wichita Technical Institute has provided hands-on training developed to help students find jobs in specialized industries. Aided by the knowledge of local business advisory board members, they keep track of present and future job trends, customizing their curricula to satisfy market demands. Integrated Electronics Technology; Computer Electronics and Networking Technology; Medical Assistant; Medical Billing and Coding; and Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Technology are some of the programs they offer.

The institute's placement professionals help WTI graduates start their searches for employment, offering referrals based on job openings in the area as well as skill requirements. Graduates of WTI find careers in Computer Technology, Avionics, Industrial/Residential/Commercial Refrigeration, Heating & Air Conditioning Technician, Network Administration, Communicator/Broadcasting, Communication Electronics, Industrial Electronics, Biomedical Technology, Medical Assistant anywhere in the medical community including front office and back office support, etc.

How is WTI different from other career schools?

Pupils say that the first-hand instruction they get instills more confidence on the job. But WTI's job placement department is what provides graduates with a competitive advantage in the job market.

The success of WTI's job placement rests on three reasons:

Soft Skill Training

Technical training is only one aspect. In addition, WTI teaches students how to undertake an effective job search and how to let potential employers know about their skills during an interview. These soft skills are included in class lecture during the entire semester.

Local Market Advisory Board

The best way to place students in jobs is to align the students' training with the needs of the market. WTI conducts continuous review with an advisory board of area companies to keep its training up-to-date and on target. New programs are designed based on the needs of employers. One such example is the Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning curriculum.

Employer Relationships

A close relationship has developed between WTI and local employers, as WTI checks with them often regarding job openings and trends in employment. Often, employers just call WTI when a position becomes available, rather than bothering with a classified ad. Many times WTI can set up interviews, speeding up the hiring process.

Background

Wichita Technical Institute was established over fifty years ago in Wichita by Robert C. Purvis, who was also president of Wichita Business College at that time. WTI was founded by Purvis to help with demand for electronics technicians that were needed because of the creation of television. He also sought to create opportunities for veterans who had served in the Korean War who were receiving tuition assistance from the G.I. Bill.

As of 2004, WTI celebrated 50 years of existence by moving to a $1.5M massive building at 2051 S. Meridian in Wichita, designed to house an enrollment which had reached 350. More WTI campuses were created on September 2002 in Topeka, KS, and March 2004 in Joplin, MO.
